On   6th  July,  1921,  a  meeting   of   former  sailors  and soldiers  was  held,  where  the  resolution  was   adopted: “That this  meeting  of  ex-Service men hereby accept The Constitution of The British Legion, and formally   establish a Branch  of  the  Legion,  to  be  known as Hayling Island Branch”. A Message from Branch President, Yvonne Leaworthy: It  is  a  pleasure  to  introduce   you  to  the  Royal  British Legion Branch of Hayling Island. Branches were formed throughout the UK in the aftermath of the  Great War,  to provide support and comradeship to the returning veterans, in memory of the many thousands who did not return and to offer succour to those in need. Here  on  Hayling I sland,  a dedicated  group  formed  a Branch  and raised funds to provide  the  Legion  with  a building,  which  opened  in 1926.    The    doors    have never   closed   since,   and today  we  have  one  of the largest    premises   in   the southern area.  All who support the aims of the Legion are welcome, and young members are increasing. The    Branch    concentrates    on ceremonial  matters,   the   annual Poppy  Appeal,   and  the  welfare needs of our ex-Service personnel; needs   which   have  intensified  in recent years.   We pride  ourselves on  the  support and financial help we have been able to provide, but this has been possible only through the efforts of the membership. So if this kind of involvement appeals, then please come and join us. I’ll wager you will enjoy it. Yours sincerely, Yvonne Leaworthy.
